Sayat-Nova (1722-1795), the major Armenian ashoogh, was a great poet, a gifted musician, a superb-performer and an impeccable virtuoso, who could play several instruments (saz, tamboor, chongoor and primarily, kemancha). Sayat-Nova created armenian love lyrics as well as philosophical and moralistic poetry. Thanks to him ashooghs poetry became an indispensable part of the historical development of national and goosan art. As a musician Sayat-Nova was the last major representative of goosans' medieval armenian urban art which in practice demonstrated the limitless possibilities of expressing, with the help of comparatively small one-part form, grand human passions. Melodies of Sayat-Nova's song combine gentleness and tenderness of intimate human felling with forceful pathetic appeals to large audiences. Nicoghos Takmizyun, Dr. of Musicology
