Avet Terteryan (1929-1994) is one of the leading composers of the end of the 20th century. Originality of his creative work puts his name among the most eminent figures of our time. National artist of USSR, Laureate of State Prize of Armenia, Professor Avet Terteryan is indeed a national composer. Having discovered new ways in the development of contemporary symphony he imprinted his compositions in the world music culture. Avet Terteryan is an author of eight symphonies (1969-1989), the ninth is unfinished, two operas: “Fire Ring” (1967) and “Earthquake” (1984), a ballet “Monologues of Richard III” (1979), vocal-symphonic cycles “Motherland” (1957) and “Revolution” (1960), two string quartets (1963, 1991), a sonata for cello and piano (1955), etc. His works have been performed in international festivals in different countries: Germany, England, Italy, USA, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, France, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands as well as in the best concert halls of Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and in other former Soviet Union countries. One of the undiscovered and magnetic secrets of his creative work is connected with the formation of the creator: he is going up towards the top of expression of his own spirit from opus to opus. The current CD “On the Path to the Symphonies” includes several works of Avet Terteryan written before the First Symphony and performed by talented musicians Anna Mayilyan and Hayk Melikyan. His first romance “Nightingale and Rose” (lyrics by A.S. Pushikn) was composed in 1948 in Baku and dedicated to its first performer Angela Harutyunyan who became a popular singer afterwards and a soloist of the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet after A. Spendyaryan. During his student years at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory he wrote two romances: “Call Me, I will Come” (lyrics by H. Shiraz translated into Russian by T. Spendyarova) and “Dnieper” (lyrics by T. Shevchenko translated into Russian by M. Isakovsky). All the three romances are transformed into piano transcriptions and performed by Hayk Melikyan.
